An e-Resource For 2018?
As I left this morning’s ReferenceUSA database demonstration, I wondered, “Could libraries use this resource to reach out to newcomers, offer programs that match residents’ interests, or make community connections? Could it be as useful to libraries as it is to patrons?” It was a good opportunity to compare the features of this business, industry, and consumer database to another possible 2018 e-resource, Mergent Online. It has company contact and sales information, but its lists, maps, and charts also display data that can be used to market a product or service, research a new business opportunity, and search for jobs. In fact, it’s integrated with the Indeed job bank, so a job seeker can find opportunities and research companies to prepare for interviews. You can search a portion of the larger database: US New Businesses, US Job and Internships, Healthcare Businesses, Canadian Businesses, and even New Movers and Homeowners. The interface is clean and easy to use. The basic search functioned well, but the advanced search really allowed one to target searches and delve into the data. I was impressed with its focus on private, local businesses – all of which areĀ phone-verified annually. Download records, email lists, and save searches. The Learning Center makes help videos, tutorials, and webinars available to patrons and staff.
Several WLS libraries already offer ReferenceUSA to their patrons. Terry Kirschner or ReferenceUSA account mangaer, TJ Pridell can help you learn more about options for our consortium or your individual library.
Hello Allison
I gave my feedback to Terry that WLS needs a robust resource for the business community and for job seekers. ReferenceUSA would be fine. The combination of Mergent/Intellect and Gale Business Insights Essentials allong with the other Gale Products and Services databases we have through NOVEL would also be effective for outreach to these communities.
